One of my favourite hobbies! Stump shooting!

Stump Shooting in Archery
What is Stump Shooting? Stump shooting is a form of archery where archers shoot at natural targets such as tree stumps, leaves, or other natural objects in a woodland or forest setting. Unlike target archery, which uses standardized targets, stump shooting involves navigating and shooting in varied, natural environments, often with the goal of improving skills like range estimation, shooting from different angles, and dealing with natural obstacles.
Equipment Needed:
- Bow: Any type can be used (recurve, compound, traditional), but many prefer traditional bows for a more authentic experience.
- Recurve Bow: Good for versatility. I use a recurve bow!
- Compound Bow: For those who want modern tech like sights and release aids.
- Longbow or Flatbow: For a more traditional feel.
- Arrows:
- Typically, arrows should be robust to withstand hitting wood or ground.
- Wooden arrows are popular for traditionalists, while carbon or aluminum might be preferred for durability and precision.
- My favourite arrows for stump shooting are “Flu Flu’s”, easier to find when you miss!!
- Arrow Points:
- Blunt tips or judo points are recommended to avoid arrow loss and damage to the arrow shaft when hitting the ground or soft wood.
- Arm Guard: To protect the arm from the bowstring.
- Finger Tab or Glove: For protection and better control when releasing the string.
- Quiver: To hold arrows securely, with a belt or back quiver being common for mobility.
- Hiking Gear: Good shoes, hydration, and possibly a map or GPS if venturing into new areas.
Reasons to Try Stump Shooting:
- Skill Development: Enhances abilities like range estimation, quick shooting, and shooting from awkward positions.
- Connection with Nature: Offers a peaceful, outdoor activity that combines sport with enjoyment of the natural environment.
- Variety: Breaks the monotony of shooting at static targets, providing new challenges with every shot.
- Community: Often practiced in groups, leading to social interaction, storytelling, and shared learning experiences.
- Improvement in Hunting Skills: For those interested in bow hunting, it’s excellent practice for real-world scenarios.
Additional Information:
- Safety:
- Always be aware of your surroundings to ensure arrows don’t fly into paths or areas where people or animals might be.
- Ensure you have permission to shoot on private land or know the regulations for public lands.
- Environmental Impact:
- Be mindful of the environment; avoid damaging living trees or disturbing wildlife.
- Practice:
- It’s beneficial to practice traditional archery techniques, like instinctive shooting, where you aim by feel rather than with sights.
- Courses or Clubs:
- Look for local archery clubs that might offer or organize stump shooting events or courses. These can provide guidance, safety tips, and a community to learn with.
- Some clubs put on events called “3D Shoots”, these kind of shoots can also be very similar!
- Legal Considerations:
- Check local laws regarding archery in natural areas, especially concerning safety, conservation, and hunting regulations.
- If lawful, you can combine stump shooting with small game hunting!
Stump shooting can be a deeply rewarding way to engage with archery, offering both challenge and tranquility in natural settings. Whether you’re looking to refine your skills or just enjoy an outdoor activity, it’s an engaging addition to any archer’s repertoire.

Have fun stump shooting!
