Bad Company was an English rock supergroup formed in London in 1973 by singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke (both formerly of Free), guitarist Mick Ralphs (ex-Mott the Hoople), and bassist Boz Burrell (ex-King Crimson). Managed by Led Zeppelin’s Peter Grant and signed as the first act to their Swan Song label, the band achieved major success in the 1970s with multi-platinum albums and enduring classic-rock radio staples.

Their third studio album, Run with the Pack(released February 1976), included the reflective ballad “Silver, Blue & Gold,” written by Paul Rodgers. The song, a fan favorite that was never issued as a single, explores heartbreak and longing through lyrics about a lost love and a plea for “silver, blue and gold” (the colors of the sky) as the singer’s “rainbow is overdue.”

Silver, Blue & Gold

  • Original lineup: Paul Rodgers (vocals/guitar), Mick Ralphs (guitar), Boz Burrell (bass), Simon Kirke (drums)
  • Key early albums: Bad Company (1974), Straight Shooter (1975), Run with the Pack (1976)
  • Notable hits from the era: “Can’t Get Enough,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Shooting Star”
  • “Silver, Blue & Gold” stands out as a more piano-driven, emotional contrast to the band’s harder-edged rock tracks and remains one of their most requested songs
  • The group has sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025

Bad Company’s bluesy hard-rock sound and Paul Rodgers’ powerful vocals helped define 1970s classic rock, with tracks like “Silver, Blue & Gold” showcasing their softer, more introspective side that continues to resonate with listeners.
