We have a small crane on the dock down at the waterfront.
One side controls the hook, up or down. The other side controls the boom, higher or lower.
You just pull the wheel off and move it to the other side when you need to use it.
The hook has large lead ball on it above the hook to slow the movement.
People use this all the time, pulling sailboat masts, heavy gear from fishing boats etc.
