Nick Gilder is an English-born, Vancouver-raised Canadian rock singer who first became known as the frontman of the glam-rock band Sweeney Todd. After leaving the group, he launched a solo career, and his 1978 album City Nights produced his biggest international success, “Hot Child in the City.”

Released in June 1978, “Hot Child in the City” combined a catchy pop-rock sound with a much darker subject. Gilder explained that the song was inspired by seeing very young girls being exploited on the streets of Los Angeles, and he deliberately presented the story from the perspective of an observer with troubling intentions.

A few interesting points:

  • Released in 1978 on Gilder’s album City Nights.
  • Reached No. 1 in Canada on October 14, 1978.
  • Reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 28, 1978.
  • Written by Nick Gilder and James McCulloch, his former Sweeney Todd bandmate.
  • Produced by Mike Chapman, known for his work with major glam/pop acts.
  • The song earned Gilder Juno recognition, including Best-Selling Single and Most Promising Male Vocalist.
  • Before his solo success, Gilder had already reached No. 1 in Canada with Sweeney Todd’s “Roxy Roller” in 1976.

“Hot Child in the City” is a fascinating example of a bright, instantly memorable 1970s pop-rock hit whose underlying story is considerably darker than its upbeat sound suggests.
