Let’s just call it what it is! A “Duplex Crab Pot” for “Double the FUN“!

So, here’s the story on this “Experimental Crab Pot

As you can see this started it’s life as 2 separate crab pots, both used successfully in the past. The pots are different though. They were obtained different times so they have a minor change that is crucial to know in BC.

The pot on the left hand side is no longer legal since the trapping regulations changed here last year.

Both traps were 24″ square, standard retail size, offering up 4 sq. ft. of floor space. Both traps have “Rot Cord” emergency exits as required.

The difference is in the permanently installed round escape rings. Last year the regs changed to require 2 escape rings of legal size installed in the correct locations as per the regs.

Trap on left has only 1 permanent escape ring! No longer legal & I wasn’t really about modifying it since I can drop 2 pots when fishing and usually only drop 1 anyway.

I think crabs were escaping because at times there was such a dogpile of big crabs in the pot that they were unable to let the doors down!

There is no regs on recreational trap sizes here as far as I can find, so, since I’m good for 2 and I’m only using 1 (Made from 2) I’m not worried about any legal grey area.

This “Pot” now offers up …..

  • 8 Square Feet of Luxury Floor Space!
  • 6 Easy Access Doors, That are further from the Bait!
  • 3 Permanent Escape Rings, (Only 2 Required)!
  • 2 Rot Cord Emergency Exits, (Only 1 Required)!
  • Needs LESS weight added than a standard single pot!

Only got a chance to use it once so far, success was limited, we were dropping this pot in an area we had never fished in before as a test. Got a bunch of “Red Rocks” in that spot, mmmmm, they were tasty too.

I’ll be experimenting with “Door Weights” & possibly “Lights” on the pots this summer.

Might even get my “Time Release Crabbing/Prawning Lure” idea for overnight or Full day sets a try as well!
