Rose Royce is an American funk and soul band formed in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Originally known as Total Concept Unlimited (and later Magic Wand), they became the backing band for artists like Edwin Starr before producer Norman Whitfield signed them, added lead singer Gwen Dickey (rebranded as “Rose”), and renamed the group Rose Royce to evoke luxury cars and the film they were scoring.

Their breakthrough came with the 1976 double album Car Wash, the soundtrack to the comedy film of the same name directed by Michael Schultz and featuring Richard Pryor. The title track “Car Wash” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, becoming a defining disco-funk hit of the era, while the album also produced hits like “I Wanna Get Next to You” and “I’m Going Down” and won a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack Album.

- Key members of the classic lineup included Gwen Dickey (vocals), Kenny Copeland (trumpet/vocals), Kenji Brown (guitar/vocals), Henry Garner (drums), and others.
- Whitfield wrote “Car Wash” quickly—legend has it on a greasy chicken box after a rehearsal.
- The group scored further success with albums like In Full Bloom (featuring “Wishing on a Star”) before Dickey left in 1980.

Decades later, “Car Wash” remains a joyful, feel-good classic that still gets people moving.
A.I. at it’s best! haha
I assume that you know I have been using A.I. to generate the images for the “Music Related” content. Sometimes it just goes crazy and makes up stuff.
The following are the first batch of images it made for me about “Rose Royce” and their song. Funny as fuck!

Let this be a snapshot about A.I. and it’s image generation ability in 2026!
