You have 2 choices for radios to suit this type of activity, FRS/GMRS Radios & Marine Band VHF Radios. They each have they’re place.
If you are boating on the coast your overall best bet is to have a “Marine VHF Radio” for the boat & “FRS/GMRS Radios” for each person in case they want to go ashore somewhere.
