Come on! Who hasn’t thought it would be cool to have a commercial delivery van conversion?

Step vans (also called walk-in vans, multi-stop trucks, or “bread trucks”) are boxy commercial vehicles designed for frequent stops and easy cargo access. They feature a low floor height, standing-room interior, and easy entry/exit (often via a curb-side door or steps), making them ideal for local delivery routes.
Camping / Van-Life Conversions
Step vans are popular DIY and professional conversion platforms precisely because of their large, square, high-roof interiors. Advantages include:
- Excellent standing room and usable floor space for beds, kitchens, storage, workshops, or living areas.
- Flat walls and floors that simplify cabinetry, insulation, and mounting.
- Relatively low used prices (often cheaper than comparable box trucks or some high-roof cargo vans).
- Stealth potential in commercial/industrial areas (they look like ordinary delivery trucks).
- Easy access and good payload capacity.
Common conversion features seen in builds: insulation, solar + lithium battery systems, fixed or convertible beds, kitchens with sinks/stoves/fridges, ventilation fans, water tanks, and sometimes showers or workspaces. Aluminum bodies resist rust well.
Trade-offs / downsides for camping use:
- Geared more for local stop-and-go driving than long highway runs or high speeds; can be slower and noisier on interstates.
- Older high-mileage commercial units may need mechanical attention (engines, transmissions, rust on steel chassis components, etc.).
- Size can make parking, maneuvering in tight spots, and height/weight restrictions more challenging.
- Insurance, registration, and licensing can sometimes be more complex than with standard passenger vans.
- Fuel economy is typically modest (examples around 10–15+ mpg depending on engine, load, and driving).
Overall, step vans excel when you want maximum interior volume and a utilitarian “big box” layout on a relatively affordable commercial platform, especially for full-time or long-term living, mobile businesses, or basecamp-style use. They are less ideal if you prioritize car-like driving dynamics, fuel efficiency on long highway trips, or easy everyday parking. Plenty of documented van-life builds exist online showing both simple and elaborate conversions.
Happy Camping!
