Eddie Rabbitt was an American country music singer-songwriter, celebrated for his smooth crossover hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in Brooklyn in 1941 and raised in New Jersey, he built a successful career in Nashville with a blend of country, pop, and rockabilly influences before his death in 1998.

“I Love a Rainy Night,” co-written by Rabbitt with Even Stevens and David Malloy, was released in 1980 as the second single from his album Horizon. The upbeat track, inspired by a fragment he recorded during a rainy night years earlier, became a major crossover success that topped multiple charts with its cheerful celebration of thunderstorms and simple joys.

  • Reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Singles, and Adult Contemporary charts in 1981
  • Features a distinctive finger-snap rhythm mimicking windshield wipers
  • Followed his earlier hit “Drivin’ My Life Away” and marked the peak of his mainstream popularity

Eddie Rabbitt and “I Love a Rainy Night” remain a bright, feel-good staple of classic country-pop radio.
