Beach Crabbing

I promised myself that when I moved out to the coast I was going to do the things I enjoy! This time, “Beach Crabbing” was on the menu. It was going to be at night, only because all the low tides are at night during this time of year (December) and I also wanted to grab some oysters while I was down there.

Low tide was going to be at about 2310 hrs. and it was supposed to be a full moon. The plan was to head down to the beach, hit the low water line and walk about 850 meters to the oystering grounds. On the way I would search the shallows for crabs.

My gear consisted of a couple buckets, a net, my crab gauge, flashlights, headlight, the basics. Weather would be about 8 degrees C., no wind, the full moon would provide the ambience!

I saw all the usual stuff while I was out there, like starfish, moon snails, jelly fish and of course, oysters.

The final take was a dozen oysters, and 1 Red Rock Crab. Good enough for a couple meals.

The crab was cooked right away so I could pick the meat for use with a rice meal in the future, the oysters were kept in the fridge for a couple days and then I would have an oyster cook for dinner!
